Information about the region

The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and the largest region in Italy, Sicily is a concentrated distillation of history, architecture and gastronomic delights, where incandescent volcanoes light up the night skies, mountain ranges jostle for supremacy, and where the sea has sculpted a coastline of stunning variety and beauty.

With its wonderful climate, Sicily is eminently visitable all the year round and each season has its own distinctive charm.

Always something to do:

  • Hiking in the mountains
  • Visiting ancient archaeological sites and baroque churches
  • Diving, fishing and sailing to discover Mediterranean Sea, off-shore islands and archipelagos
  • Attending the Operas and classical tragedies in the Greek theater of Syracuse
  • Skiing on Mount Etna
  • Shopping in Palermo, Taormina and Agira’s fashionable boutiques

HISTORY AND ART

Wherever you turn you will see evidence of Sicily’s 3,000 years of history as the strategic crossroads of Europe. Nowhere else have Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, French, Germans, Spanish, Italians, and even the British, left such an enormous collective legacy.

The art, the architecture, the agriculture, the jobs, the language, the landscape, the way of thinking, the way of being and of doing of Sicilians remains unique.

UNESCO

Sicily is recognized by Unesco and by all the world as a World Heritage in its seven beloved sites and in its three Intangible Culture Heritage.

FOOD, WINE & FESTIVALS

Everyone who comes to Sicily falls in love with the food, street food and wine!

You will love the variety, the freshness, the simple use and combinations of ingredients and the fact that they are virtually always locally grown or produced.

Sicily is the largest producer of wine in Italy and give to travelers the opportunity to visit many wineries, meet the wine producers and taste unique and unforgettable wines in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Nearly all towns and villages have their very own food and wine “sagra” and religious festivals to celebrate the fruits of their labors and their Patron Saints.

FOOD MARKETS & SHOPPING

The outdoor markets and shops on the island are an experience in and of themselves. Visitors can purchase plenty of quality handicraft items, ceramics, artifacts and antiques.

Palermo, Taormina and Agira are best shopping centers with some of the most Italian and foreign fashion houses, including Armani, Gucci, Prada, D&G, CK Jeans, Ferrari, Lacoste, Rifle, Versace, Trussardi.. and they all offer fabulously reduced prices!

NATURE

In Sicily there are some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, like Spiaggia dei Conigli in Lampedusa, nature reserves, marine protected areas, wetlands and four Regional Parks:

Park of Etna, Madonie, Nebrodi and Park of Alcantara.

GOLF?

Of course! Three main areas, two golf resorts with 36 holes: Donnafugata in the Southeast and Verdura in the Southwest; plus two more courses on the East coast Il Picciolo and I Monasteri, close to Taormina and flaming Mount Etna.

WEDDINGS: in Sicily with love

Many couples from all over the world choose this heaven on earth location to be the ideal place to celebrate the most beautiful day in their life.

SMART SPECIALIZATION STRATEGY

The Region of Sicily has set out its Smart Specialization Strategy – Ris3 Sicily as a basic policy instrument to pursue smart and sustainable growth and the knowledge economy in Sicily.

Approved by the European Commission in August 2015 within European Union 2014–2020 Cohesion Policy, Ris3 Sicily is supporting the implementation of the EU Operating Program for Sicily (PO FESR SICILIA 2014-2020), with the investment of over EUR 4,57 billion (including national co-financing).

Of this amount, 57% is concentrated on 4 key priorities: innovation and research (10%), the digital agenda (7%), support for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) (15%), and the low-carbon economy (25%).

A wide and active partnership of the most significant regional actors, including firms, science and business parks, universities and other research institutions, civil society organizations as well as regional and local authorities contributed to design the Strategy, and are presently involved in its implementation.

Based on the analysis of the strengths and potential of the regional economy as well as on business and entrepreneurial needs, Ris3 Sicily identifies the following 6 strategic areas for intervention:

1.  Health and life science;

2.  Energy;

3.  Smart cities & communities;

4.  Tourism and culture;

5.  Sea economy;

6.  Agrofood.

The regional government is confident that full implementation of the Strategy through the Operating Program 2014-2020 will help Sicily achieve the EU-wide goals of growth and jobs and reduce economic and social disparities, so contributing to pursue Europa 2020 strategy.
